MediaWest Con 31 Report!
savestracheys
I attended MediaWest Con beginning Thursday afternoon, and ending Tuesday. (The con ran Friday-Monday, but some of us just have to extend the party...LOL) The first thing I did on Thursday was post signs around the hotel for our Strachey party on Sunday.

I had dinner at a Chinese buffet with two of my con buddies, Vivian and Linda. We did the traditional Thursday night "room crawl". There aren't as many hall dealers as there used to be in past years, but there are still a few good ones. :-) There are some good deals to be had if you're looking for used zines. Our waterloo was one of the jewelry dealers who sells gorgeous pieces with mostly opaque stones in sterling.

Friday morning started with breakfast in the hotel dining room. The hotel is newly remodeled, and the rooms and convention spaces looked really nice. The restaurant remodel is great--all done in shades of blue and white--but the service wasn't. It seemed like 99% of the staff had never worked in a restaurant before, and large groups frightened them. LOL That was a minor setback, though. The hotel staff were friendly and accommodating as they always are.

In the past, registration for the con was a two-hour event with a huge line, so we planned for that. Not sure how they've done it, but registration took all of a few minutes, so we hung out in the lobby and chatted and read our program books until the dealers' room opened at noon.

It was a smaller crowd this year (smaller being a relative term, since MW is still a big fan con--it's probably small in comparison to the big pro cons, but as cons by fans for fans go, it's a biggie). The moment the dealers' room door opened in the past used to be like festival seating at a rock concert, with a mad rush of bodies. This was a nicer pace, with a little more elbow room. :-) There was a nice selection of t-shirts, jewelry, fannish items, etc. There were some dealers missing, including a couple key ones who do tote bags, t-shirts, and other fannish items.

Panels started at one, and we had a two-hour block of Strachey panels from 1-3. Our turnout wasn't as big as I'd hoped, but that's a challenging time slot. Some people arrived late due to various weather and other delays, and some are still hanging out in the dealers' room. We had about six people, and some great discussion. Our first topic was what we thought the guys' childhoods were like. Most of us agreed that Timmy came from some level of wealth, had a great relationship with his mother, but we also discussed the "fracture" in the family regarding Kelly, and his parents' reactions to her rebellion and the tattoo. Donald's childhood was more of an open book that we could be swayed either way on, but most people felt he wasn't abused/neglected as a child, since he's so good with Timmy and treats him so well--we felt he learned how to love from someone, most likely a parent/grandparent.

The second panel was on why Timmy left the seminary. I'm not sure we exactly settled on a single answer, but the front runner seemed to be that he couldn't be who he was in the seminary, and that was probably what motivated him to leave. We didn't really resolve the question about why Donald says he was "kicked out", vs. him voluntarily leaving. Some speculated it was semantics.

Friday night, the slash vids showed for the first time. Slash vids are always shown after 9PM (not sure why, but apparently they're protecting the gen fans from hysterical blindness should they happen to stumble in by mistake...LOL). Anyhow, Angie's (Male Drzewo) song vids were a great representation for Strachey fandom, drew big applause, and the vid show lady even acknowledged that they generated a lot of interest last year, and this year, too. Later, some people I talked to mentioned how they'd seen the vids, and now were going to Amazon to get the movies. So, Angie, you go, girl!!

The zine was still being finished up as the con got rolling. We had a second panel Saturday evening, with similar turnout as the other panels. All I can figure is our panels weren't at optimal times, because they weren't quite as well attended as last year, but the interest in the fandom overall seems just as strong as ever, if not building.

The zine made its debut on Sunday, with the ladies at Light and Shadow Press assembling and binding in the dealers' room. Once the zine hit the tables, it started flying out of there as fast as they could put them together. The cover art is beautiful (cheers to Lorraine!), the interior art is gorgeous (kudos to Jean!), and the formatting and overall look is sharp and professional (bravo to Glow, Kelly, Kath, and company!). Out of 50 copies, there was only a small stack left, so while I don't know the exact number that sold, I know they sold well. I have two stories in the zine, and was excited to read Nyte's and Storyfan's contributions. They were both lovely--I expected nothing less. So our authors, artists, publishers, and vidder all did ourselves proud representing our fandom at the con!!

Our party was Sunday from 11AM to 1PM in the party suite. It was called "Brunch with the Strachey-Callahans", and we had fruit, cheese, sausage, little pastries, donut holes, chips and drinks while we watched "Ice Blues" on the widescreen TV. A few fans made donations to Chad's participation in the AIDS Lifecycle. We had about 15 people attending, and everyone enjoyed the movie. We gained a couple new fans from the party, too! I got buttons made up for the party (that nice shot of Donald and Timmy sitting outside, smiling). It was good to see Strachey fans wandering around with them on after the party!

The other notable moments on Sunday included a tornado warning (the sky turned dark gray, and apparently one hit nearby Eaton Rapids--we were in Lansing--and destroyed a house there). Some people lost power, and the hotel staff were suggesting guests take refuge in the service hall. Vivian and I decided that was a good time to hit the hotel dining room, since we wanted to make it to the Art Auction at 7 (the weather mayhem was around 5ish). So we scored a table in the interior part of the dining room away from the windows and watched the torrential rains and heavy winds from a safe distance. The auction was postponed an hour due to the weather.

Fortunately, it cleared up, and we didn't have to deal with any disasters at the hotel. I haven't said much about the art show--there are always some interesting pieces in the art show, including jewelry and other trinkets in addition to paintings, prints, etc. There were some beautiful Suzan Lovett pieces in S&H and Sentinel fandoms, and some great Hawaii 5-0 pieces. Unfortunately, no Strachey art in the show, and we were missing notable artists Lorraine Brevig (we missed you, Lorraine!) and Jesse McLain (I hope I spelled that right!). Still, the art auction is a great live show, and one of the con highlights. I got a necklace and a photo I'd bid on before the auction.

Monday morning, I did two panels from 10-noon, and they were fun. Around ten people showed up, and we meandered through a variety of topics including the importance of feedback to slash authors, what makes a show a "fandom" show, and then a whole bunch of miscellaneous things people wanted to talk about.

Monday afternoon, hung out with friends, had dinner at Finley's up the street from the hotel, and Vivian, Linda, and I watched Shock to the System in my room to top things off. Had breakfast Tuesday at Bob Evans, and bid farewell to another MW, and headed for home.

Anyway, that's how the con went. We are, I believe, officially, the "little fandom that could". ;-)

More on the Fourth of July Campaign!
savestracheys

Thanks to Maledrzewo for entrusting me to post unsupervised here!  Just got back from a trip to my nearest dollar store, and thought I'd throw out these suggestions.  I found red, white and blue leis, 12-foot flag banners that could be folded up small enough to fit in a standard envelope, little flag-themed bows, windsocks, and those "fireworks" decorations that are weighted to hold down helium balloons.  Let's get creative, and make this fun for the folks at HERE! who have to open our mail (the more clever we are, the more likely they are to show their bosses or display some of the fun stuff they get!) .  Let's send anything patriotic we can fit into a mailer or envelope that won't cost a fortune to send (I'm going to remove the weight from the fireworks decoration and attach it to one of Nyte's graphics, for example!)  Let's include the leis with messages attached (We want to see Donald and Timothy get lei'd on HERE!TV with more Strachey movies!), take a banner and stick one of Nyte's lovely graphics on every other flag, and also include traditional mini-flags, pin-on buttons, etc.  Let's do something the folks at HERE will get some laughs from, instead of just making them open our mail. :-)

Start sending these anytime, folks.  The Fourth of July is a week from Sunday, so let's start sending them stuff as soon as possible!  Ask friends in your other fan communities to help out.  I posted a request in Sentinel and Starsky & Hutch fandoms to give us a hand, and a couple people have already said they'll help.  Know someone who watches the movies with you but isn't in the "fan community"?  Ask them if they'd like you to send a note or patriotic novelty item on their behalf, from their name/address (you do the work!).  My mom loves the movies, and watches them with me, so I always send something in her name, too, because she's a fan!  I would suggest sending something separately to each of our contact names, for best impact!

Let's keep that momentum rolling!!  And for our non-US fans, is there a big holiday in your country you could use as a theme for notes or novelties?  If so, use it and make a statement about the worldwide appeal of these movies!

Candy, waving her pompons in the air... :-)

SUPERFANS! And an idea for the 4th of July, join in!
savestracheys
Hello everybody!

Here is some exiting news from Candy and a proposal for everyone who wants more Strachey movies! Please join in and let us know if you are all up for anotherr round!

And over to Candy!

"There's an article in the most recent issue of TV Guide Magazine that should inspire our campaigners to renew their efforts!  It's called "The Power List: Meet the 25 Most Influential People in Television".  Guess who's at number 25?

SUPERFANS!

The passage reads: "From Chuck fans buying Subway meals and Jericho devotees sending nuts to CBS to get their show back on the air to the countless Twitter accounts and websites devoted to every detail of their shows, fans everywhere now have more influence than ever over what gets on the air and stays on.  Director David Nutter (Supernatural, The Mentalist) says, "It's no secret that the passionate television audience is taken very seriously by the creatives and suits alike."

Now, folks, that's from an industry insider, and TV Guide is giving the nod to the power of the fans.  We already know there have been rumblings at Here!TV about another Strachey movie.  So let's keep up the effort.

For American fans, let's send them flags for the 4th of July!  They're everywhere right now, even in dollar stores.  We could attach little notes saying "Bring back the fireworks with more Donald Strachey Movies!"

It's quick and easy to do, and it's eye-catching.  Anybody game to give it a try???"

JUST LET US KNOW AND WE WILL GIVE IT A ROLL!!!

Donald Strachey Mysteries at the Media West Con in Michigan, Candy's report
savestracheys
Hello Everybody!
This last weekend there was a big event releated to Donald Strachey Mysteries Movies! Candy took our little fandom to the Media West Con in Michigan and made her voice very well heard there capturing the hearts of new viewers and fans all around there! We are honored to be able to post her report!
Please join the campaign and help us make dreams come true and get more Donald Strachey books taken to the big screen!
THANK YOU CANDY!

CON REPORT

Over Memorial Day weekend, I packed my Donald Strachey DVD's, my t-shirt made for me by a friend with a pic of the guys on it, three lovely vids made by Male Drzewo, and headed for MediaWest Con in Lansing, Michigan.  This is a convention organized by fans, for fans, with lots of group discussions, fandom-themed parties, and other activities.

I was fully prepared to be a fandom dodo bird (please read that as dough-dough, not dew-dew LOL), flapping my wings furiously and trying to recruit more people to my obscure little fandom.

While I won't say that we've exactly beaten out "Lost" or the CSI franchise, the Donald Strachey Mysteries is definitely the Little Fandom That Could.  Everywhere I went, it seemed, people I know from other fandoms recognized the guys, and already loved the movies (I bumped into a few who had read the books but didn't know there were movies, so I set them on the path to righteousness - well, actually, I told them to subscribe to Here!TV and dowload them, or order them from Amazon, but it's the same thing!).  Many of these fans first discovered the movies through a songvid at another convention (that's how I heard about it, too!).

Anyone who didn't know about the series, I told them about Donald and Timothy, this wonderful, romantic, devoted male couple who are the lead characters in a series of movies with quality casts and strong mystery storylines.  Quite a few recognized Chad from his Dr. Quinn days, and others recognized Sebastian from First Wave or his guest role on Supernatural, which also has a big fan following.  I encouraged everyone I could to download them from Here!TV, and then drop the network an e-mail to explain why they subscribed and to ask for more Strachey films.  I gave out info on the campaign LJ page, and our other LJ communities.  I directed them to YouTube to check out the wonderful songvids there.  I will say this - for a small fandom, we have awesome writers, vidders, and artists, so it wasn't hard to recommend things for new people to check out.

The best "pimp your fandom" tool I was armed with were Male Drzewo's three beautiful songvids, which were entered in the video competition (we won't know about winners for a while, since the voting will take place online in the near future, after the convention).  The video show ran three times over the weekend (slash/mature videos are always shown in the evening - proof the really fun people come out at night, I guess!).  My con buddy and I were there for the first showing Friday night when the room was at its fullest (probably about 100 people), and not only did the Strachey vids earn enthusiastic applause, I heard several people asking what that series was and how to get it.  I would have jumped in, but other fans were filling in their friends on the movies' availability through Amazon, etc.  I managed to catch the tail end of the Saturday night show, and while the crowd was tiny (it was opposite a lot of other events), the folks there also reacted
positively.  I can honestly say Male Drzewo's entries were by far the sweetest and most touching relationship vids in the show.  The fan who coordinated the vid show said we should enter again next year because they generated a lot of interest!

A few of the mega-shows like Lost or CSI boasted room-stuffing crowds at their group discussions, but a lot of the discussion groups averaged 6-8 people.  I was a little miffed at first that our one and only Strachey discussion was scheduled for 8pm on Saturday night, since that competes with parties, a masquerade, and other activities at the convention.  We had 12 - count them - 12 people show up.  And we had an awesome discussion about the movies, the books, the characters...if another group hadn't needed the room, we would have probably gone well over our hour limit.

On Sunday at 11am, I hosted a gathering to watch Third Man Out.  I was optimistic, and bought snacks and a couple bottles of soft drinks, but I had this nagging fear it would be myself, my con buddy, and one or two stragglers there.  We packed the room with 25 fans munching popcorn and chips and watching Third Man Out, many of whom had never seen the movies before.  Some came from the flyers I posted (strategically decorated with a lovely shot of Donald and Timothy kissing), some from word of mouth, and others came with friends.

All in all, a great opportunity to recruit people to help with the campaign.  Many of these fans have participated in save-the-show campaigns before, so they're receptive to the idea of making their voices heard.  I hope we see some new faces on LJ soon, and that those of us who are already hanging out here can create some good discussion threads in our communities to get them talking.

So, onward in the fight for more movies...we've got even more fans than we thought depending on us!!
